VIDS as an organization has grown from a small core of dedicated individuals to a steadfast, widely supported and representative indigenous organization that has a clear voice in policy making and implementation with regard to the rights and interests of the indigenous peoples of Suriname, as well as sets and follows a clear direction with regard to its own members and “constituency”. VIDS is recognized as the government's interlocutor when it comes to the indigenous people of Suriname, as well as other institutions and organizations, including international environmental and donor organizations. The Indigenous community supports VIDS as its own lead organization; After all, VIDS consists of representatives appointed by the people themselves.
