In 1169 a Kurdish emir of the army of Syria, Saladin, succeeded his uncle at the head of the vizirate of Egypt which he had just conquered. He became the most famous sultan of Islam by reconquering the city of Jerusalem from the Franks. He ensured the continuity of a family dynasty from Yemen to Egypt and from Syria to Upper Mesopotamia.
